Population is an essential component that supports the formation of a country. With the projection of the population of Indonesia, which will reach 305.7 million people in 2035 and 321.4 million in 2050, it is clear that understanding of population dynamics is needed. North Sumatra Province, as one of the provinces with the most population in Indonesia, recorded around 14 million people with a population growth rate of 1.27% in 2018. This study aims to project the birth rate, mortality rate, and population composition in North Sumatra during the 2015 to 2050 period using the Spectrum program application. This program is a tool used for planning and advocacy related to reproductive health and family planning.

Methodology Used in the Study

The methodology used in this study is a descriptive quantitative approach, which utilizes secondary data such as the population of the initial year, Total Fertility Rate (TFR), Age Specific Fertility Rate (ASFR), Gender Ratio at Birth, Life Expectancy, and Life Table Model starting from 2015. Projection is carried out with two scenarios. The first scenario sets TFR of 2.1 in 2025, which will be stable until 2045 in accordance with the 2015-2019 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), before declining to 1.91 in 2050. The second scenario, which is in line with national predictions, assumes TFR will be at 1.91 during the 2045-2050 period.

Results of the Analysis

The results of the analysis show that, in the first scenario, TFR is expected to reach 2.1 in 2025 if it can reduce TFR by 0.11 per year. The second scenario estimates that TFR is at 2.1 in 2039 with a decrease of 0.04 per year. The infant mortality rate is also projected to reach 21 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2050 for the two scenarios. Furthermore, the number of productive age population is expected to increase significantly between 2040 to 2050, especially in the second scenario, when compared to the first scenario. In 2050, it appears that the young population will decrease, while the productive and elderly population will increase. Therefore, the two scenario has proven to be more appropriate to project several indicators of North Sumatra demographic from 2015 to 2050.

Implications of the Study

Based on the findings in this study, there are urgent needs to improve the implementation of family planning programs. This is important to reduce the number of early marriage, increase the number of contraceptive users, and ensure a married couple can arrange births and conduct regular health checks. In addition, the government is expected to be able to take advantage of the opportunities for existing demographic bonuses to maximize the potential of the population in supporting regional development.

Conclusion

With good management of the Family Planning Program and the use of appropriate demographic data, it is hoped that North Sumatra can face the challenges of future demographics in the future with a better and more sustainable. The projection of demographic indicators using the Spectrum program application has proven to be a useful tool in understanding the population dynamics of North Sumatra. By using this tool, policymakers and planners can make informed decisions to address the challenges of population growth and development in the region.
