In recent years, the development of hydrogels has gained significant attention due to their unique properties and potential applications in various fields, including biomedicine, agriculture, and the textile industry. Hydrogels are three-dimensional networks of polymer chains that can absorb and retain large amounts of water, making them ideal for applications such as wound dressings, contact lenses, and drug delivery systems. In this study, we explore the potential of cellulose carboxymethyl (KMS) in forming cellulose-based hydrogels through a cross-binding method, which involves the modification of the formation of interpenetration polymer tissue (JPI).

The Role of Cellulose Carboxymethyl in Hydrogel Formation

Cellulose is a biodegradable and renewable polymer that is widely available in nature. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a derivative of cellulose that has been modified with carboxymethyl groups, which provide it with unique properties such as high water absorption and solubility. In this study, we used KMS as a raw material to form semi-JPI hydrogel through a cross-binding method. The addition of KMS to the hydrogel formation process was found to play a crucial role in the formation of a strong hydrogel tissue with high water absorption and degree of crossing.

Materials and Methods

The semi-JPI hydrogel was formed by dissolving KMS in a 1000/NaOH PEG solvent system. The acrylic acid monomer (AA), the initiator of Potassium Persulfate (KPS), and the N'-Metylene Bisacrylamide (MBA) cross-binder were then added to the solution. The resulting semi-JPI hydrogel was characterized using various techniques, including water absorption test, percentage test of the degree of crossing, chemical structural analysis using Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermal resistance using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA).

Characterization of Semi-JPI Hydrogel

The semi-JPI hydrogel formed was characterized using various techniques to determine its properties and structure. The water absorption test showed that the addition of KMS as much as 0.8 grams produced a semi-JPI hydrogel with the highest percentage of water absorption and degree of crossing, which was 683% and 42.3%, respectively. This indicates that KMS plays an important role in the formation of a strong hydrogel tissue and is able to absorb large amounts of water.

The FTIR analysis provided evidence of the occurrence of cross bonds between acrylic acid and MBA, marked by the appearance of wave numbers at 1403 cm-1 and 1560 cm-1 (COO- absorption) and 3413 cm-1 (NH amine absorption). This cross bond is the key to the formation of a stable three-dimensional structure of hydrogel.

The DTA analysis showed the thermal stability of JPI semi-hydrogel with the addition of optimal 0.8 gram KMS, with perfect degradation occurring at 650oC. The reaction that occurs during the decomposition process is a combination of endothermic and exothermic reactions, indicating the thermal properties of complex hydrogels.

This study shows that the modification of JPI formation with the addition of KMS in cellulose-based hydrogel can produce materials with better properties, such as the ability to absorb high water and optimal thermal stability. The development of cellulose-based hydrogel has the potential to be applied in various fields, such as biomedicine, agriculture, and the textile industry. The use of KMS as a raw material for hydrogels offers several advantages, such as abundant availability, easily modified traits, and biodegradability.

Further development of KMS-based semi-JPI semi-hydrogel needs to optimize its nature and increase its potential in various applications. This can be achieved by modifying the properties of KMS, such as its molecular weight and degree of substitution, to improve its performance in different applications. Additionally, the development of new techniques for the synthesis and characterization of KMS-based hydrogels can help to unlock their full potential.
