Introduction

Arabica coffee is a vital commodity that supports the economy of farmers in Indonesia. However, a decline in Arabica coffee production is a significant problem that needs to be addressed. One of the factors that influence coffee production is the availability of plant nutrition, particularly nutrients P and Mg. This research was conducted in Paricssabungan Village, Dolok Pardamean District, Simalungun Regency, to reveal the relationship between the concentration of N nutrients and MG elements in the leaves with Arabica coffee production.

Background

Arabica coffee is a high-quality coffee species that is widely cultivated in Indonesia. However, its production has been declining in recent years due to various factors, including soil degradation, climate change, and inadequate plant nutrition. Nutrients P and Mg are essential for plant growth and development, and their availability can significantly impact coffee production. P is involved in photosynthesis, fruit maturation, and seed formation, while Mg is a crucial component of chlorophyll, which plays a role in photosynthesis.

Methodology

This study used a survey method with purposive sampling, where samples were randomly chosen from coffee plants that had appropriate characteristics for laboratory analysis. The parameters measured included levels of P and Mg in the leaves, the weight of the production of coffee beans, weighing 100 seeds, and the percentage of normal seeds.

Results

The results of the correlation analysis show that an increase in levels of P in leaves is directly proportional to increased production. Each increase in one unit of P concentration in the leaf will increase the weight of production by 4.11 grams, a weight of 100 seeds by 0.61 grams, and the percentage of the normal seed is 1.37%. Conversely, the MG nutrient has a weak and insignificant relationship with the production of coffee beans.

Multiple regression analysis shows that the elements of N nutrients and MG together affect the production of Arabica coffee. Simultaneously, P and Mg affect the weight of production of 20.1%, weight of 100 seeds by 25.3%, and the percentage of normal seeds is 15.7%.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that nutrients P play an important role in increasing Arabica coffee production. P is an essential nutrient that is involved in the process of photosynthesis, fruit maturation, and seed formation. Adequacy of P which is adequate will increase the efficiency of these processes, so that it has a positive impact on the harvest.

Although Mg has a lower influence, it still needs attention. MG is an important component in chlorophyll, which plays a role in photosynthesis. Mg deficiency can cause chlorosis (yellowing leaves), which can interfere with the process of photosynthesis and reduce production.

Recommendation

Based on the results of this study, here are some recommendations that can be applied to increase Arabica coffee production:

*** Increasing P levels in the soil: ** Farmers can use phosphate fertilizer or do organic fertilization that is rich in P. *** Paying attention to the needs of Mg: ** Although the effect is lower than P, MG is still important for plant growth. Farmers can use MG fertilizer or do soil analysis to find out the needs of MG in coffee plants. *** The application of good cultivation practices: ** Good soil management, such as plant rotation, and proper soil treatment can help increase the availability of nutrients in the soil.

Conclusion

This study provides important information for Arabica coffee farmers about the role of N nutrients and MG elements in increasing production. By applying the recommendations given, it is expected that Arabica coffee production can increase and provide economic benefits for farmers.

Limitation

This study has some limitations, including the small sample size and the limited scope of the study. Further research is needed to confirm the findings of this study and to explore other factors that influence Arabica coffee production.
