Introduction

Soybean is one of the most important food crops in Indonesia, providing a high economic value and serving as a source of vegetable protein for the community. To achieve optimal crop yields, environmental factors such as soil humidity need to be considered. This study aims to examine the effect of soil humidity on the development of generative organs in several soybean genotypes.

Background

Soybean is a legume crop that is widely cultivated in Indonesia. It is a valuable source of protein and oil, making it an essential crop for food security. However, soybean growth and development are influenced by various environmental factors, including soil humidity. Soil humidity plays a crucial role in the physiological processes of plants, including the development of generative organs. Optimal soil humidity allows plants to absorb water and nutrients well, which is essential for the growth of roots, stems, leaves, and flower and fruit formation.

Methodology

This study was conducted in Sampali, Medan, from March to July 2000. The method used was a complete random design (RAL) with two factors and three replications. The first factor is soybean genotype, with 20 different genotypes, ranging from local varieties to superior varieties. The second factor is the soil humidity level, with three levels: 80% of the field capacity (KL), 60% KL, and 40% KL.

The Effect of Soil Humidity on the Development of Generative Organs

Soil humidity plays an important role in the development of generative organs in soybean plants. Optimal soil humidity allows plants to absorb water and nutrients well, which is essential for the growth of roots, stems, leaves, and flower and fruit formation. However, high soil humidity (80% KL) can lead to a lack of oxygen in the roots, which can inhibit growth and development. On the other hand, low soil humidity (40% KL) can cause dehydration and nutritional deficiencies, which can interfere with the formation of flowers and fruit.

Analysis and Research Results

This study shows that soil humidity has a significant effect on the development of generative organs in some soybean genotypes. In general, soybean genotypes that grow on soil humidity 60% KL show the best results, both in terms of the number of flowers, the number of pods, and seed weight per pod.

The Importance of Selecting Genotypes that are Tolerant of Drought

The results of this study indicate that different soybean genotypes have a level of tolerance for different drought. Some genotypes are able to adapt well to low soil humidity, while others have decreased growth and production. Therefore, the selection of the right genotype becomes very important in facing the challenges of climate change and lack of water.

This study provides important information for farmers and plant breeders to understand the effect of soil moisture on the development of soybean generative organs. Recommendations that can be taken from this study are:

Selecting soybean genotypes that are tolerant of drought. This is essential in facing the challenges of climate change and lack of water.
Applying the right cultivation techniques to maintain soil moisture at the optimal level. This can be achieved through efficient irrigation technology and crop rotation.
Utilizing efficient irrigation technology to increase soybean productivity. This can help to reduce water waste and increase crop yields.

Conclusion

By understanding the effect of soil humidity on soybean growth and development, we can increase plant productivity and food security in Indonesia. This study provides important information for farmers and plant breeders to select the right soybean genotype and apply the right cultivation techniques to maintain soil moisture at the optimal level.
