The Influence of Community Participation and DHF Control Programs Carried Out by the Medan Class I Port Health Office on the Existence of Aedes Aegypti Larvae in Bagan Deli Belawan Village in 2012
Introduction
Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a contagious disease caused by the dengue virus, transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. North Sumatra ranked third in DHF cases in Indonesia in 2011, with the Medan Belawan District recording 63 cases in 2010. The Kelurahan Bagan Deli, located in the Belawan Port Buffer area, is a working area of the Medan Class I Port Health Office (KKP) with DHF (HI) endemicity levels above 1%. This study aims to analyze the effect of community participation and DHF control programs carried out by the Class I KKP Medan on the existence of larvae Aedes aegypti in Bagan Deli Village in 2012.
Background
DHF is a significant public health concern in Indonesia, with the disease causing a substantial number of deaths and hospitalizations each year. The disease is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in stagnant water and is commonly found in urban areas. The Medan Class I Port Health Office (KKP) is responsible for controlling the spread of DHF in the area, including the Kelurahan Bagan Deli. However, the effectiveness of the DHF control programs carried out by the KKP is not well understood, and there is a need for further research to determine the impact of these programs on the existence of larvae Aedes aegypti .
Methodology
This study used a cross-sectional design with an analytical descriptive approach to analyze the effect of community participation and DHF control programs carried out by the Class I KKP Medan on the existence of larvae Aedes aegypti in Bagan Deli Village in 2012. The research population included 3569 Family Heads (KK) in Bagan Deli Village and 10 KKP Class I Medan officers. Samples of 100 families were taken randomly using simple random sampling. Data was collected through interviews and observations, and analyzed using the chi-square test and multiple logistics regression tests.
Research Result
The results of this study showed a significant relationship between community participation in DHF control through environmental manipulation (p = 0.041), physical control (p = 0.037), and chemical control (p = 0.030) to the existence of larvae Aedes aegypti . However, there was no significant relationship between community participation and DHF control through environmental modification (p = 0.767) and biological control (p = 0.902). The DHF control program conducted by the Class I KKP Medan showed a significant relationship with the abatization program (p = 0.021), fogging (p = 0.021), and counseling/socialization (p = 0.010). The Mosquito Survey Program (P = 0.877) did not show a significant relationship with the existence of larvae Aedes aegypti .
Conclusion
This study concluded that the extension/socialization program carried out by the Class I KKP Medan had the most significant influence on the existence of larvae Aedes aegypti in Bagan Deli Village. The results of this study suggest that community participation and DHF control programs carried out by the Class I KKP Medan are effective in reducing the existence of larvae Aedes aegypti .
Recommendation
Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that Medan Class I KKP officers increase counseling efforts and provision of information media regarding the prevention and prevention of DHF to the public. On the other hand, the community is expected to increase active participation in efforts to control DHF.
Implication
The findings of this study have implications for public health policy and practice in Indonesia. The results suggest that community participation and DHF control programs carried out by the Class I KKP Medan are effective in reducing the existence of larvae Aedes aegypti . This information can be used to inform the development of public health policies and programs aimed at controlling the spread of DHF in Indonesia.
Limitation
This study has several limitations. The study was conducted in a single village, and the results may not be generalizable to other areas. Additionally, the study relied on self-reported data from community members, which may be subject to bias.
