Introduction
The increasing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly building materials has led to the exploration of alternative commodities for the manufacture of particle boards. Palm oil waste, a byproduct of the palm oil industry, has emerged as a promising alternative material for particle board production. Materials and Methods
The particle boards tested in this study had a size of 30 cm x 30 cm x 1 cm with a density of 0.75 grams/cm³. The process of making this board used urea formaldehyde adhesive, which was then compressed at a pressure of 25 kg/cm². The experimental method used was a complete random design (RAL) with factorial analysis involving three temperatures (120ºC, 130ºC, and 140ºC) and four forging time (8, 10, 12, and 14 minutes).
Testing and Results
The testing on the particle boards included density measurement, water content, water absorption, thickness swelling, broken modulus, compression strength parallel to the surface, and internal bonds. The results showed that the time of menting and interaction between temperature and the time of menting significantly affected the water content. In addition, the temperature of menting also affected the modulus of the particle board broken.
Optimal Composition
The optimal composition for the particle board was obtained at a combination of heating temperatures of 120ºC and 8 minutes of compression. Below this condition, the board density reached 0.74 g/cm³, water content recorded 6.95%, water absorption of 57.72%, 9.40% thickness swelling, modulus of elasticity of 12,037 kg/cm², broken modulus 116, 57 kg/cm², and internal bonds reached 4.61 kg/cm².
