Introduction

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a serious public health problem, particularly in tropical regions. The prevention of this disease relies heavily on breaking the transmission chain, and community participation plays a crucial role in this effort. This study aimed to investigate community behavior in preventing DHF at the Medan Johor Health Center in Medan City, Indonesia, in 2009. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed to gather data from six families consisting of fathers, mothers, children, environmental heads, health cadres, and health workers.

Background of the Study

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever is a significant public health concern in tropical regions, including Indonesia. The disease is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. The prevention of DHF relies on breaking the transmission chain, and community participation is essential in this effort. In Indonesia, the Medan Johor Health Center in Medan City is one of the areas where DHF is a significant public health problem.

Methodology

This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to gather data from six families consisting of fathers, mothers, children, environmental heads, health cadres, and health workers. The study was conducted from February to May 2009 in the working area of the Medan Johor Health Center. The data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations.

Results

The results of this study indicate that the knowledge and attitudes of the community towards the prevention of DHF are very influential on them in taking precautions. Some people realize the importance of cleaning activities, especially when there are family members infected with DHF, where fogging is considered an effective solution to kill mosquitoes that cause the disease. However, this knowledge and attitude are not always enough. Various factors such as lack of facilities, lack of understanding of the importance of precautions, as well as limited information can be a barrier for the family to take the necessary steps.

Discussion

Community participation is one of the main pillars in an effective DHF prevention program. The involvement of various elements of society, including health cadres, community leaders, and religious leaders, strongly supports the success of the program. It is essential to emphasize that sustainable education and socialization regarding the domestic dangers and their prevention methods can increase public awareness. In this context, the use of mass media, seminars, and training for health cadres at the community level is very necessary. By providing appropriate and accurate information, it is hoped that the community can improve their attitudes and behavior in fighting DHF.

Conclusion

Overall, community behavior in preventing DHF at Medan Johor Health Center shows an awareness of the importance of preventive measures, but it still needs to increase knowledge and support from various parties to achieve more optimal results. The involvement of all levels of society in the prevention of DHF is the key to strengthening efforts to handle this disease in the future.
