Introduction

The university library plays a vital role in supporting the academic success of students. A well-functioning library circulation service is essential to ensure that students have access to the resources they need to complete their studies. However, the quality of library circulation services can vary significantly between institutions. This study aims to investigate the student perception of the quality university library circulation service at Berastagi Quality University Library, located in Lau Gumba, Sempajaya, Karo, North Sumatra.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive method to investigate the student perception of the quality university library circulation service. The research sample consisted of 85 students, selected using the Slovin formula from a population of 580 students at Berastagi Quality University. The data was collected through the distribution of questionnaires, which were then processed and presented in the form of frequency distribution. The data interpretation was carried out based on the percentage of each respondent's answer.

Registration of Library Members

The registration of library members is a crucial step in accessing library resources. The results of this study showed that most students (65.89%) agree that registration of library members is a mandatory step. Furthermore, 70.58% of respondents stated that the registration process for members is very easy. This indicates that students feel comfortable with the registration procedures applied. The ease of registration is essential to ensure that students can access library resources without any difficulties.

Loan Services

The loan services provided by the library are also an essential aspect of the circulation service. The results of this study showed that 64.71% of respondents assume that the collections allowed to be borrowed, namely 3 books, are quite appropriate. However, the lending period set for 1 week was considered long by 57.64% of respondents. This suggests that students may require a longer lending period to complete their studies. Additionally, 70.58% of respondents considered the loan process that reaches ± 5 minutes feels long. This indicates that the loan process needs to be improved to meet students' expectations.

Book Returns

The book return process is another critical aspect of the circulation service. The results of this study showed that 71.76% of respondents considered the existing procedure was good. However, 70.58% felt that the processing time of ± 3 minutes was also relatively long. This suggests that the book return process needs to be improved to reduce the processing time and meet students' expectations.

Book Extension Regulations

The book extension regulations are also an essential aspect of the circulation service. The results of this study showed that the majority (58.82%) agreed that the extension could be done 2 times and 81.17% felt that the extension process was ± 1 minute fairly fast. This indicates that students are satisfied with the book extension regulations and the processing time.

Billing Fines for Borrowers

Billing fines for borrowers who are late in returning books is also a concern. The results of this study showed that most respondents (65.89%) agreed with the provisions of a fine of Rp.500 per day per book. However, 48.23% of respondents felt that the requirements for free loan/library management were still considered easy. This suggests that students may require more flexibility in borrowing library resources.

Conclusion

This study provides a clear picture of student perceptions of circulation services at the Berastagi Quality University Library. The results of this study showed that although there are aspects that are considered good, there is still space for improvement, especially in increasing the efficiency of the loan process and return of books. By listening to input from students, the library can further improve the quality of its services so that it can meet the needs and expectations of its users.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improve the efficiency of the loan process: The loan process needs to be improved to reduce the processing time and meet students' expectations.
Reduce the processing time for book returns: The book return process needs to be improved to reduce the processing time and meet students' expectations.
Increase flexibility in borrowing library resources: Students may require more flexibility in borrowing library resources, such as longer lending periods or more frequent extensions.
Provide more information about library services: Students may require more information about library services, such as the availability of resources, borrowing policies, and fines for late returns.

By implementing these recommendations, the library can improve the quality of its services and meet the needs and expectations of its users.
