Effect of Self-Esteem and Extrinsic Motivation on the Performance of the Implementing Nurse: Case Study at RSUD Dr. Pirngadi City of Medan

Introduction

The quality of nursing services is highly dependent on the performance of the nurses. Nurse performance can be assessed from their success in providing optimal nursing care. This research was conducted at RSUD Dr. Pirngadi Medan to reveal the effect of self-esteem and extrinsic motivation on the performance of the implementing nurse.

Background

Nurse performance is a critical factor in determining the quality of nursing services. Self-esteem and extrinsic motivation are two important factors that can influence nurse performance. Self-esteem refers to an individual's perception of their own worth and abilities, while extrinsic motivation refers to the external factors that drive an individual's behavior. Research has shown that self-esteem and extrinsic motivation can have a significant impact on nurse performance.

Methodology

This study uses a quantitative descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach. Data was collected through a survey of 86 implementing nurses chosen randomly from 600 implementing nurses at RSUD Dr. Pirngadi Medan. Data collection was carried out during the period December 2015 to January 2016.

Data Analysis

Data analysis was carried out using univariate analysis, bivariate analysis, and multiple linear regression. Univariate analysis is used to describe research variables, while bivariate analysis is used to examine the relationship between self-esteem, extrinsic motivation, and nurse performance. Multiple linear regression analysis is used to test the effect of the two independent variables on nurse performance.

Results

The results showed a significant influence between self-esteem and extrinsic motivation on nurses' performance. The effect of self-esteem and extrinsic motivation on nurses' performance in sequence reaches 0.591 and 0.661. The R Square value shows that 51.8% of nurse performance can be explained by self-esteem variables and extrinsic motivation. The regression equation in this study is y = 24,603 + 1,248x1 + 1,159x2. This result also shows the absence of multicollinearity between independent variables.

The results of this study have important implications for the development of human resources in the field of nursing. The study shows that self-esteem and extrinsic motivation have a significant influence on nurse performance. Increasing these two factors can be an important strategy in improving the quality of nursing services in RSUD Dr. Pirngadi Medan and other hospitals.

Conclusion

In conclusion, self-esteem and extrinsic motivation have a significant influence on the performance of nurses. Increasing these two factors can be an important strategy in improving the quality of nursing services in RSUD Dr. Pirngadi Medan and other hospitals.
