Introduction

Financial management is a crucial aspect of household management, particularly for farmers who rely heavily on their income from agricultural activities. In Sei Beras Sekata Village, Sunggal District, Deli Serdang Regency, farmers' households face significant challenges in managing their finances effectively. This study aims to examine the financial management and saving behavior of farmers' households in Sei Beras Sekata Village, with a focus on understanding the factors that influence their financial management.

Methodology

This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining observation and interview methods to collect data from 60 farmers' households in Sei Beras Sekata Village. A questionnaire was used to collect data, which was then analyzed using Likert scaling techniques, descriptive analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis.

Results

The results of this study showed that the financial management of farmers' households in Sei Beras Sekata Village is still classified as unfavorable. The majority of farmers' households do not have a habit of saving regularly, and when they do save, they tend to save small amounts of money at home, typically under Rp 100,000. The main purpose of saving is to meet the needs of the next planting season.

Further analysis revealed that the number of family members, the number of types of assets, and income have a significant influence on the management of farmers' household finances. In other words, the more family members, the more types of assets they have, and the higher the income, the better the financial management. Conversely, long education and land ownership status do not show a significant effect on the management of farmers' household finances.

Discussion

The findings of this study highlight the importance of economic and demographic factors in the management of farmers' household finances. The high number of family members, assets owned, and income provide greater opportunities for households to better manage finances. However, the low level of education and access to land do not show significant effects on financial management.

This study also suggests that financial literacy is a critical factor in improving the financial management of farmers' households. Increasing financial literacy can help farmers understand the importance of saving, planning expenses, and managing finances wisely. Additionally, introducing easily accessible savings programs, increasing access to funding sources, and encouraging business diversification can also help improve the financial management of farmers' households.
