Application of the Use of Personal Protective Equipment to Palm Oil Factory Workers PT. Adei Plantation and Industry NPOM 2 Pelalawan Regency 2021

Introduction

The palm oil production process is a complex and hazardous activity that involves the use of various tools and raw materials. Unfortunately, safety and health aspects are often overlooked, making workers vulnerable to accidents and diseases. One of the steps taken to protect workers is the application of personal protective equipment (PPE) at PT. Adei Plantation and Industry NPOM 2 located in Pelalawan Regency. This study aims to evaluate the application of PPE in seven processing stations, including FFB and Loading Ramp Station, boiling stations, separation stations, pressing stations, clarification stations, kernel stations, and boiler stations.

Background

The use of PPE is a crucial aspect of ensuring the safety and health of workers in high-risk work environments such as oil palm factories. PPE provided for workers includes helmets, safety shoes, gloves, masks, ear plugs, and work clothes. The provision of PPE is essential to prevent injuries and illnesses caused by exposure to hazardous materials, equipment, and environments. However, the effectiveness of PPE depends on the workers' compliance with its use.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive research method, which provides a general picture of the application of PPE in the field. The population sample consisted of 30 workers operating in the seven processing stations. Data were obtained through an observation sheet to describe the application of the use of PPE. The results showed that the provision of PPE was complete according to work needs at each processing station. However, despite the provision of PPE, there were still workers who did not use it while working.

Results

The results of this study showed that 22 workers did not use PPE, while eight workers did not apply the use of PPE. The causes of non-compliance varied, with some workers claiming to have never had an accident before, while others felt uncomfortable and hot when using PPE. In addition, lack of supervision during working hours was also a factor that contributed to the low level of compliance.

Discussion

The results of this study emphasize the importance of applying PPE in high-risk work environments such as oil palm factories. Although the APD has been provided and there is an awareness of the importance of its use, challenges remain in terms of workers' compliance. Therefore, companies need to increase supervision efforts and provide deeper education about the benefits of using PPE. In this way, it is expected to reduce the risk of work accidents and maintain the health of workers at PT. Adei Plantation and Industry NPOM 2.

Conclusion

This study highlights the need for companies to take a more proactive approach to ensuring the safety and health of workers. The provision of PPE is essential, but it is equally important to ensure that workers comply with its use. The company is expected to conduct further evaluations related to the system of supervision and disciplinary enforcement in the use of PPE. These steps are important to create a safer and healthier work environment for all workers.
