Introduction

Meats of meat (Crassostrea gigas) have become one of the most popular fisheries commodities in Aceh, especially in the city of Banda Aceh. The increasing demand for oysters has led to excessive exploitation due to fishing and water pollution, resulting in a decrease in both the quantity and quality of oysters. This study aims to examine aspects of oyster reproductive growth and biology, which is very important for the development of aquaculture in the future and maintaining its sustainability.

Background

The city of Banda Aceh is known for its rich marine biodiversity, with oysters being one of the most valuable fisheries commodities. However, the overfishing and water pollution have led to a decline in oyster populations, making it essential to study their growth and bioreproduction. Understanding the biology of oysters is crucial for developing sustainable aquaculture practices that can help maintain the health of oyster populations and ensure their continued contribution to the local economy.

Methodology

This study was conducted for six months from July to December 2017 using two research locations, namely Tibang waters and Ulee Lheue, each of which was divided into three stations for sampling. The Purposive Random Sampling method was applied to ensure a representative sample of oysters. Various analyzes were conducted, including morphometric measurements, age predictions, mortality rates, recruitment patterns, gonad maturity levels, gonad maturity index, fecundity, sexual dismorphism, and sex ratios. In addition, the analysis of water quality and phytoplankton diversity was also carried out to understand its impact on growth and reproduction of oysters.

Results

The results showed that there were significant differences in the morphological character of oyster morphology taken from two locations (p <0.05). Oyster growth as a whole occurs with a negative allometric pattern, and most of the oysters studied are one year old. Male oyster shows the first time gonad maturity in the size of 26.40 mm in Tibang and 25.45 mm in Ulee Lheue. Meanwhile, female oysters began to cooked at 20.46 mm in Tibang and 25.24 mm in Ulee Lheue. The spawning peak occurred in August, with an average fecundity of 17,360,821 eggs per head in Tibang and 17,108,206 eggs per head at Ulee Lheue. This study also found that oysters contain hermafrodite sex.

Discussion

Environmental conditions in both locations are considered to still support oyster growth. Although the abundance of phytoplankton in both high waters, it does not significantly affect the ratio of observed oyster sex. This shows that oyster sustainability in the future can be supported through good management of the aquatic environment. The study's findings highlight the importance of understanding the biology of oysters and the impact of environmental factors on their growth and reproduction.

Conclusion
