Introduction

Indonesia, a country known for its rich cultural diversity, is home to numerous tribes and ethnic groups. This diversity is not only reflected in the languages, customs, and traditions of the people but also in their physical characteristics, including the shape of their heads and faces. In forensic medical science, the identification of head and face shapes is crucial in uncovering someone's identity, both in the case of deceased individuals and live people. This study aims to explore the differences in the head index (cephalic) and facial index based on tribes in Medan, a city in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Background

The study of human physical characteristics, particularly the shape of the head and face, is an essential aspect of anthropology. In Indonesia, where there are over 300 ethnic groups, each with their unique physical characteristics, the study of head and face shapes can provide valuable insights into the country's rich cultural heritage. The cephalic index, which measures the ratio of the width of the head to its length, is a widely used parameter in forensic anthropology to identify human remains. Similarly, the facial index, which measures the ratio of the width of the face to its length, is also an important parameter in identifying human remains.

Methodology

This study employed an analytical descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach and a consecutive sampling technique. The study was conducted at two hospitals in Medan, namely H. Adam Malik Hospital and RSU dr. Pirngadi Medan, from July to September 2011. A total of 402 individuals, consisting of 187 men and 215 women, aged 21-30 years, were selected as the research sample. The participants were students who were undergoing registration at the senior clinics of the two hospitals.

Results

The results of this study showed that the average Indonesian Cephalic Index (CI) based on ethnicity was 82.84. When analyzed by sex, the average CI for men and women was also 82.84. However, further analysis revealed that the Indonesian CI based on ethnicity showed significant differences, while based on sex, significant differences were only found in men, with women not showing any significant differences.

The average Indonesian Facial Index (FI) based on ethnicity was 86.43, while based on sex, it was 86.53. These results indicate that the Indonesian FI has no significant differences both based on ethnicity and sex.

Discussion

This study provides an initial picture of the differences in the shape of the head and face based on tribes in Medan. However, further research is needed to obtain more comprehensive data, involving a larger number of samples and various tribes in other regions of Indonesia. The data obtained in this study can be used to improve the process of forensic identification, particularly in Indonesia, which has a diverse range of ethnic groups and cultures.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study has provided valuable insights into the differences in the head and face index of native Indonesians based on tribes in Medan. The results of this study can be used to improve the process of forensic identification and contribute to the development of physical anthropology in Indonesia. Further research is needed to obtain more comprehensive data and to explore the differences in the head and face index of various tribes in other regions of Indonesia.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted in only two hospitals in Medan. Secondly, the study only analyzed the head and face index of individuals aged 21-30 years, which may not be representative of the entire population. Finally, the study did not consider other physical characteristics, such as skin color, hair texture, and body shape, which may also be important in identifying human remains.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to obtain more comprehensive data by involving a larger number of samples and various tribes in other regions of Indonesia.
