Introduction

One of the media that is often a reference is The Jakarta Post, which presents various perspectives on social, political, and cultural phenomena. This study aims to analyze the presence of presuppositions in the editorial text produced by The Jakarta Post. The focus of the analysis includes identification of triggers for presupposition, classification of types of presuppositions, as well as trigger descriptions that are realized in each type of presupposition.

Methodology

This study uses qualitative content analysis methods with data taken from the Jakarta Post website. The data collected includes sentences or clauses that trigger the meaning assumed in the editorial text. The process of identification, analysis, and categorization is carried out based on the theory of the presupposition put forward by Yule and Levinson. The results showed that there were 13 triggers of the foundation found, namely: definitive description, factual item, implicative verb, verb changes in conditions, assessment verbs, items, cleft sentences, temporal clauses, comparative construction, contrafactual conditions, and relative clauses non-restrictive. On the other hand, no use of implicit cleft with stressed constituents.

Types of Presuppositions

From this analysis, six types of presuppositions are identified in the editorial text, namely: existential, lexical, structural, factual, nonfactive, and contrafactual presuppositions. Each type of presupposition has its own characteristics and functions in the context of communication. For example, Realization of Definitive Description Triggers existential presupposition that shows the assumptions of certain individuals or entities.

Existential Presuppositions
