The Relationship of Watching a Live Concert on YouTube with the Happiness of Students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, the North Sumatra University

Introduction

In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, providing us with endless entertainment options and opportunities to connect with others. For students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), University of North Sumatra (USU), watching live concerts on YouTube has become a popular pastime. But what is the relationship between watching live concerts on YouTube and the happiness of USU FISIP students? This study aims to explore the patterns and motivations of USU FISIP students in watching live concerts on YouTube, as well as their relationship with their level of happiness.

Methodology

This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research population includes 2,374 USU FISIP students for class 2017-2019. A sample of 96 respondents was taken using the quota sampling technique. Data was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using a single table analysis, cross table, and Spearman RHO correlation test through the SPSS 22 application.

Theoretical Framework

This study is based on the theory of Uses and Gratification and the aspects of Happiness Perma according to Seligman. The theory of Uses and Gratification suggests that people use media to satisfy their needs and desires, while the aspects of Happiness Perma provide a framework for understanding the concept of happiness.

Results

The results of this study show that there is a low relationship between watching a live concert on YouTube and the level of happiness of USU FISIP students. The correlation coefficient (r) is 0.313, which indicates a rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (ha). This suggests that watching a live concert on YouTube has an influence on the happiness of USU FISIP students, even though the level of influence is only 9.79%.

There are several reasons why watching a live concert on YouTube can have a positive impact on the happiness of USU FISIP students.

Watching live concerts simultaneously with other spectators on YouTube can create a sense of community and togetherness, especially for students who may not be able to attend the concert directly. This can help to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, promoting a sense of belonging and connection with others.

Motivation and Inspiration

Music has the power to motivate and inspire. Watching live concerts can provide positive energy and new enthusiasm, helping students to stay motivated and focused on their academic goals.

Pleasure and Excitement

Music concerts are generally filled with energy and joy, which can be transmitted to the audience and enhance mood. Watching a live concert on YouTube can provide a much-needed boost of happiness and excitement, helping students to feel more positive and uplifted.

The Role of Social Media in Increasing Happiness

This study shows that social media, such as YouTube, can be a source of happiness for users. Although its influence is relatively low, the existence of social media in the lives of USU FISIP students has a positive impact on entertainment, community, and motivation.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of social media in increasing happiness among USU FISIP students. Watching live concerts on YouTube can provide a much-needed break from the pressures of academic life, promote a sense of community and togetherness, motivate and inspire, and provide pleasure and excitement. While the influence of social media on happiness is relatively low, its existence in the lives of USU FISIP students has a positive impact on entertainment, community, and motivation.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Promote the use of social media as a tool for entertainment and relaxation: Universities and educational institutions can promote the use of social media as a tool for entertainment and relaxation, providing students with a much-needed break from the pressures of academic life.
Create online communities for students: Universities and educational institutions can create online communities for students, providing a sense of community and togetherness among students who may not be able to attend concerts directly.
Use music as a tool for motivation and inspiration: Music can be used as a tool for motivation and inspiration, helping students to stay motivated and focused on their academic goals.
Provide opportunities for students to engage with social media: Universities and educational institutions can provide opportunities for students to engage with social media, promoting the use of social media as a tool for entertainment, community, and motivation.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

Small sample size: The sample size of this study is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
