Effect of Motivation on Posyandu Cadre Performance in Weighing Toddlers in the Working Area of the Bandar Khalipah Puskemas Khalipah District of Sei Tuan 2018
Introduction
Weighing toddlers is a crucial activity to detect growth problems early on, preventing malnutrition and lack of nutrition in children. In the working area of the Bandar Khalipah Health Center, Percut Sei Tuan District, the average coverage of weighing in toddlers in 2016 only reached 70.01%, which is still far below the national target set above 85%. The low coverage of this weighing is closely related to the role of Posyandu cadres, which function as the driving force of the activity. However, cadre performance is often affected by low motivation. This study aims to analyze the effect of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on the performance of Posyandu cadres at the Bandar Khalipah Health Center in 2017.
Background
Toddler weighing is a vital activity that requires the involvement of Posyandu cadres as the driving force. However, the performance of these cadres is often affected by low motivation. Intrinsic motivation, such as interests and a sense of responsibility, reflects the encouragement from the individual to contribute and carry out tasks well. Conversely, extrinsic motivation associated with training provides the support and skills needed to carry out tasks more effectively. The low influence of incentives and community support can be an indication that the community does not fully understand the importance of the role of posyandu cadres, or maybe also due to inadequate incentives.
Methodology
The method used in this study is the Explanatory Survey. The research population consists of all Posyandu cadres in the working area of the Bandar Khalipah Health Center, and the samples taken amounted to 38 cadres from a total of 10 posyandu. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression to see the relationship between motivational and performance variables.
Results
The results showed that 57.9% of respondents had bad performance, 18.4% had poor performance, and only 23.7% showed good performance. Variable interest, responsibility, and extrinsic motivation such as training are proven to have a significant influence on the performance of cadres with the value of P <α 0.05. However, the incentive variable and community support did not have a significant effect on the performance of the cadre, which is indicated by the value of P> α 0.05.
Discussion
The importance of weighing toddlers not only lies in statistical numbers, but is also closely related to the long-term health of children in Indonesia. In this context, Posyandu cadres as the spearhead of public health services play a very vital role. The results of this study indicate that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation have a significant influence on the performance of Posyandu cadres. Therefore, it is suggested to the Community Institution and Village Community Empowerment (LKMD) to provide guidance that can increase the motivation of Posyandu cadres. Thus, cadre interest can grow and develop.
Conclusion
The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant influence between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on the performance of Posyandu cadres. Therefore, it is suggested to the Community Institution and Village Community Empowerment (LKMD) to provide guidance that can increase the motivation of Posyandu cadres. Thus, cadre interest can grow and develop. In addition, Puskesmas officers are expected to be more active in carrying out health promotions and education to the community, especially regarding toddler weighing activities, so that people increasingly believe and are willing to bring their toddlers to be weighed every month.
Recommendation
The implementation of this recommendation does not only have the potential to improve the performance of Posyandu cadres, but will also have a positive impact on the health of toddlers in the region. Thus, investment in increasing cadre motivation and education to the community is a strategic step that must be taken by all stakeholders in the health sector.
