Analysis of Cakalang Fish CPUE (Katsuwonus Pelamis) at the Port of Fisheries of the Archipelago Sibolga

Introduction

Located on the west coast of North Sumatra, Sibolga is one of the areas with high fishing activities. The skipjack fish (Katsuwonus pelamis) has become a main commodity captured using the purse seine method. This study aims to analyze the value of CPUE (catch per unit effort) and the factors that influence the production of skipjack fishing in the Sibolga Nusantara Fisheries Port (PPN). The methodology used in this study is descriptive, with a sample of 40 fishermen from a purse seine ship, which is selected through purposive sampling technique.

Methodology

The data analysis used in this study is CPUE analysis methods and multiple linear regression. The results showed that during the six-year period (2011-2016), the value of cpue fish skipjack at the Sibolga VAT experienced significant fluctuations. The average CPUE value was recorded at 199.70 kg/trip. The highest number was recorded in 2016, reaching 412.24 kg/trip, while the lowest number occurred in 2015, which was 32.70 kg/trip.

Results and Discussion

Based on the analysis of factors that affect the catch, this study found that simultaneously, the experience of fishermen, ship size, engine power, and the length of the trip had a significant effect on the production of skipjack fish. However, interestingly, the fuel amount does not show a significant effect. Among all the factors studied, the length of the trip was identified as a dominant factor that had the most powerful influence on the production of skipjack fish.
