Introduction

Seagrass fields are a vital component of marine ecosystems, providing a habitat for various marine species and playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. On Unggh Island, Central Tapanuli Regency, research has been conducted to investigate the structure of the Macrozoobentos community associated with seagrass fields. Macrozoobentos organisms are an essential part of the marine food chain, serving as a food source for various species and as bioindicators of marine pollution. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the density of seagrass and the structure of the macrozoobentos community.

Background

Seagrass fields are an important ecosystem that supports a diverse range of marine life. They provide a habitat for various species, including fish, invertebrates, and algae, and play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Seagrass fields also contribute to the health of marine ecosystems by reducing coastal erosion, improving water quality, and providing a nursery for juvenile fish. However, seagrass fields are facing threats from human activities, such as coastal development, pollution, and overfishing, which can lead to the degradation of these ecosystems.

Methodology

This study was conducted in May 2017 using the Purposive sampling method. Data collected includes seagrass vegetation observations, macrozoobentos community structures, and measurement of water quality parameters. The study site was located on Unggh Island, Central Tapanuli Regency, and consisted of four stations with different seagrass densities. The data collected was analyzed using regression analysis to determine the relationship between seagrass density and macrozoobentos density.

Results

The results of this study showed that there were three seagrass species found at the study site, with different densities at each station. The highest seagrass density was found at station I, with 133 ind/m², while the lowest seagrass density was found at station III, with 41 ind/m². In addition, this study recorded 22 macrozoobenthos species in the area. The macrozoobentos density at each station varied, with the highest density found at station I, with 6,115 ind/m², and the lowest density found at station III, with 1,957 ind/m².

Regression Analysis

The regression analysis performed shows a positive relationship between seagrass density and macrozoobentos density with the regression equation y = 14.083x + 44,448, where R² = 0.4655 and R = 0.6822. This shows that the relationship between seagrass density and macrozoobentos density is strong. That is, every increase in seagrass density will have a positive impact on macrozoobentos density.

Discussion

The existence of a healthy seagrass is very important not only for marine life, but also for people who depend on marine resources for their livelihoods. Through this research, it can be seen that the management and preservation of seagrass fields must be a priority to ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems, as well as to increase fisheries production that can provide economic benefits for local communities. In addition, periodic monitoring of water quality and the structure of the marine biota community is also needed to maintain the health of aquatic ecosystems.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study has shown that there is a strong positive relationship between seagrass density and macrozoobentos density. The results of this study are important for increasing awareness of the need for preservation of the marine environment and sustainable management of fisheries resources. These efforts can include community education, the application of conservation policies, and further research to deepen the understanding of the seagrass and macrozoobentos ecosystems in other regions. Thus, the sustainability of marine ecosystems can be maintained for future generations.
