Identification and Characterization of Various Types of Bananas (Musa spp.) In Asahan Regency

Introduction

Bananas are one of the most important agricultural commodities in Indonesia, including in Asahan Regency, North Sumatra. The country's tropical climate and rich soil make it an ideal place for growing a wide variety of banana species. In this study, we aimed to identify and characterize various types of bananas (Musa spp.) that grew in several districts in Asahan Regency. Our research was conducted in Air Joman District, Kisaran Timur District, and Buntu Pane District from June to August 2022.

Methodology

Our research used a descriptive survey method, utilizing a banana description guideline from the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute. We employed purposive sampling techniques to obtain 27 samples of banana plants from 9 villages, with each village providing 3 different samples. This approach allowed us to gather a diverse range of banana genotypes and characteristics.

Results

Our study identified six banana genotypes, namely:

Banana Barangangan: This type of banana is characterized by its unique shape and size, with a larger fruit size compared to other types.
Jackfruit Banana (SST24): Known for its sweet taste, this banana variety has a unique flavor profile that sets it apart from other types.
Banana Banana: This type of banana is a popular variety in Asahan Regency, with a sweet and creamy taste.
Banana Wrapped: As its name suggests, this banana variety has a unique wrapping or skin that sets it apart from other types.
Banana Kepok: This type of banana is famous for its large fruit size and sweet taste.
Ambon Banana: This variety of banana is known for its unique shape and size, with a sweet and creamy taste.

Each of these banana genotypes shows a variety of morphological characters, including the shape of the leaves, plant height, and fruit shape and size. For example, Kepok bananas have a larger fruit size compared to other types, while jackfruit bananas are famous for its unique sweet taste.

Brix Content Analysis

One of the interesting findings of this research is the Brix content (sweetness level) in a banana sample. Our analysis showed that SST24 samples (jackfruit bananas) have the lowest Brix content of 20%, while Sl11 samples (banana kepok) have the highest Brix content reaching 29.8%. This finding highlights the diversity of banana varieties not only in terms of their physical characteristics but also in terms of their quality and taste.

Conclusion

Our study demonstrates the great potential of the diversity of banana genotypes in Asahan Regency for the development of agricultural products. The identification of these types of bananas is crucial for helping farmers choose varieties that are suitable for their land and climate conditions, as well as meeting increasing market demand. Furthermore, knowledge about the characteristics of morphology and the content of Brix can help in efforts to improve the quality and taste of banana produced.
