Introduction

The Toba Batak language is a unique and complex language spoken by the Toba Batak people in North Sumatra, Indonesia. In this study, we aim to explore the pattern of pronunciation of sound speech at Toba Batak language sufferers stroke, with a focus on neurolinguistic studies.

Background

The Toba Batak language is a polysynthetic language, which means that it uses a combination of roots, prefixes, and suffixes to form words. Methodology

Blumstein theory suggests that the brain processes language in a hierarchical manner, with phonological processing occurring before syntactic processing. Broca's theory, on the other hand, suggests that the left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for language production, and that damage to this area can lead to language impairment.

Results

The results of this study showed changes in votes, especially substitutions on consonants that often occur. For example, consonant sounds [p] changed to [f], [d] to [j], [ŋ] to [n], [g] to [k], and a number of other changes such as [r] to [l] and [b] to [w]. The substitution for vocals can be seen from changes [u] to [o] and [a] to [i]. There are also interesting variations such as changes [i] to [y] and additional consonant sounds that are unusual such as [y], [h], [ɳ], and [k].

Regarding sound loss, this study found that consonant sounds such as [p], [s], [k], [g], [m], [h], [r], [b], [c], and [ŋ] Experiencing removal, while for vocals, sound loss occurs in [U], [i], and [O]. This finding illustrates that pronunciation that is affected in stroke patients is not only related to the physical aspects, but also reflects the presence of disorders in certain areas in the brain.
