Introduction

Air pollution is a significant problem faced by many cities in Indonesia, including Medan. The city's rapid industrialization has led to an increase in air pollution, posing a threat to public health and the environment. One of the primary sources of air pollution in Medan is the exhaust gas from various industries. This study aims to reveal the characteristics of industries in Medan based on the level of air pollution caused by the exhaust gas.

Background

Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra, is one of the fastest-growing cities in Indonesia. The city's rapid industrialization has led to an increase in air pollution, which has become a major concern for the government and the public. The exhaust gas from industries is one of the primary sources of air pollution in Medan. Methodology

The method used in this study is cluster analysis, a technique that groups objects based on the similarity of their characteristics. By using the Single Linkage method, this study succeeded in identifying five industrial cluster groups in Medan City. The cluster analysis was performed using a dataset that included information on the level of air pollution caused by the exhaust gas from various industries in Medan.

Results

The results of this study are presented in the following sections:

Cluster I

*** Cluster I ** consists of two companies with a very high level of similarity, indicating that the two companies have almost the same level of air pollution. The two companies are located in the same industrial area and have similar production processes, which may contribute to the similarity in their air pollution levels.

Cluster II

*** Cluster II ** consists of only one company, showing the characteristics of unique air pollution and different from other groups. The company is located in a different industrial area and has a different production process, which may contribute to the uniqueness of its air pollution level.

Cluster III

** Cluster III ** is the largest group with 13 companies, indicating the similarity of significant air pollution patterns among these companies. The companies in this cluster are located in the same industrial area and have similar production processes, which may contribute to the similarity in their air pollution levels.

Cluster IV

*** Cluster IV ** consists of only one company, showing the characteristics of unique air pollution and different from other groups. The company is located in a different industrial area and has a different production process, which may contribute to the uniqueness of its air pollution level.

Cluster V

*** Cluster V ** consists of only one company, showing the characteristics of unique air pollution and different from other groups. The company is located in a different industrial area and has a different production process, which may contribute to the uniqueness of its air pollution level.

Discussion

The results of this study provide valuable information for stakeholders in the city of Medan. By understanding industrial characteristics based on the level of air pollution it causes, the government can implement the right strategy to minimize the negative impacts on the environment and public health. The government can increase supervision of industries classified in clusters with high levels of pollution, such as clusters I and III. Additionally, educational and socialization programs can be implemented to raise awareness among industries about the importance of reducing exhaust emissions.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations can be taken:

*** Increasing supervision: ** The government needs to increase supervision of industries classified in clusters with high levels of pollution, such as clusters I and III. This can be achieved by conducting regular inspections and monitoring the level of air pollution caused by these industries.

*** Educational Program: ** Educational and socialization programs can be implemented to raise awareness among industries about the importance of reducing exhaust emissions. This can be achieved by providing training and workshops on environmentally friendly technologies and practices.

*** Incentives: ** Provision of incentives to industries that successfully implement environmentally friendly technology to reduce exhaust emissions can encourage the adoption of the technology more broadly. This can be achieved by offering tax breaks, subsidies, or other forms of financial support to industries that adopt environmentally friendly technologies.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study has provided valuable information on the characteristics of industries in Medan based on the level of air pollution caused by the exhaust gas. The results of this study can be used by the government to implement the right strategy to minimize the negative impacts on the environment and public health. By increasing supervision, implementing educational programs, and providing incentives, the government can encourage industries to adopt environmentally friendly technologies and reduce their air pollution levels.
